Following his undergraduate studies at the University of Groningen, the Netherlands, Rense Lange was awarded a Doctorate in Psychology and a Master's Degree in Computer Science from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, USA. Currently, he heads the ISLA Laboratory for Statistics and Computation (LSC) in Vila Nova de Gaia - Porto (Portugal). LSC leverages the power of modern psychometrics, process mining, and machine learning to applications in banking, education, hospitality, social media, tourism, and personnel selection.

Rense Lange has published over one hundred refereed papers, books, and chapters in the areas of computer science, econometrics, education, machine learning, medicine, psychiatry, psychology and psychometrics, and he serves as a reviewer and member of the editorial board of several journals. As well, he is an Honorary Fellow at the Malaysian Psychometric Association.

Integrated Knowledge Systems (IKS) focuses on the application of advanced psychometric techniques and machine learning in new contexts and emerging industries. Over the past years IKS has served clients in Canada, China, Malaysia, Mexico, Portugal, Spain, and the USA using the latest technologies.

  • In educational assessment this includes Computer Adaptive Testing (CAT) to achieve greater efficiency, as well as Automatic Essay Grading (AES) where students’ essays are graded by computer.
  • In financial technology (FINTECH), IKS pioneered the use of psychographic data to obtain reliable credit ratings. Using this approach banks can now provide loans to meritorious – but often under-served – groups, like minorities or women, that may lack extensive credit histories.
  • In tourism and hospitality, IKS has a long history of providing new assessment approaches to screen and select personnel at varying levels.
